The late show with Stephen Colbert scored his first Emmy Award for Best Talk Series at 2025 Emmy Awards on Sunday (September 14) and defeated Jimmy Kimmel Live! and daily show.
During his first show after victory, Colbert proudly showed the Golden statuettes and pulled out, “We should have canceled years ago.”
The joke referred to the CBS announcement that the show will end in May 2026, which will close a ten -year run.
Praise for team and audience
Colbert attributed the victory to his staff and crew: “This award belongs to 200 hardworking people who do this show primarily to the authors of this show … do it every day.”
He introduced everyone from editors and trainees to the closet and safety before he added: “And of course the audience separation that leaves you all beautiful people every night. Because you, the audience… are those who eventually allow this show.
He also thanked the TV Academy, Emmys producers and Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel.
Jab to Trump
Colbert closed his notes Emmy kicking: “When we are talking about Emmys, Donald Trump has none.”
Trump’s hard answer
The victory watches Trump’s earlier flicker over the abolition of the show: “I absolutely love Colbert was released. His talent was even less than his rating. I heard that Jimmy Kimmel was another.”
Trump also refused Colbert as “talentless” and said, “I could go out in beautiful streets and choose a few people who do just as well or better. They would get a higher rating than him.”
CBS explains the abolition
However, CBS claimed that the abolition “is not related to the performance of the show”, but rather a financial decision.
Trump’s Emmy frustration
Although Trump never won Emmy, the apprentice earned him two nominations in 2004 and 2005. He repeatedly claimed that the prizes were “manipulated”, even caused a problem during the presidential debate in 2016 against Hillary Clinton.
