The former India opener also made it clear that the team wants to continue to push the boundaries in T20 cricket. Gambhir said that India are still aiming to cross the 300-run mark in the format, which shows the team’s ambition to keep improving even after winning the World Cup.
Samson’s knock changed the tempo
Gambhir said the innings played by Sanju Samson during the tournament gave the dressing room confidence that the team’s aggressive approach can succeed even on the biggest stage.
“The ease and composure with which he batted gave us a lot of confidence in the group that we were on the right track,” Gambhir said.
He added that India has been criticized earlier for playing attacking cricket in bilateral series but failing to replicate the same approach in ICC tournaments.
According to Gambhir, things started to change after that Samson’s big knock against the West Indies. He also highlighted the role of Ishan Kishan, who has moved to the No.3 position, and said that the batting order has started to adjust after this stage of the tournament.
Still climbing Mt 300
Despite winning the title, Gambhir said the team must continue to improve and aim higher in the future.
“This is the beginning, not the end. We still have a lot more to achieve. We still haven’t touched 300. Hopefully one day we can do that and we want to be even more ruthless,” Gambhir said.
He also reflected on the challenges of coaching, explaining that once a match starts, the outcome is largely down to the players.
“You can create the best environment, make players feel safe and share their input and knowledge. But once the game starts, your results and reputation depend on how good the players are,” he said.
Gambhir reiterated that success in cricket is always a collective effort and that no coach or captain can achieve results alone. He also urged the players to remain humble and act as ambassadors of the country while continuing to play undaunted cricket.
