Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu announced the formation of a high-level committee to study the challenges faced by sugarcane farmers and recommend a comprehensive solution.
The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting held at the Secretariat with sugarcane farmers, industry representatives and the Chairman of the Sugarcane Development Council (CDC).
The minister said the government has taken serious note of the continuous decline in sugarcane cultivation area in the state in recent years. A committee headed by Special Principal Secretary, Department of IT and Industry will prepare a detailed report.
He will conduct a comparative study of the benefits, incentives and subsidies offered to sugarcane growers in other states and submit his recommendations as soon as possible. The committee will also consider a request for continuation of subsidy on drip irrigation for sugarcane, which officials say can increase yields by 8-9 tonnes per acre.
The Minister assured to convey to the Chief Minister the farmers’ demand to extend the ₹500 per quintal bonus currently given on fine paddy fruit to sugarcane as well.
