During the reception, which also marks Irish American Heritage Month, the Taoiseach of Ireland presented US President Donald Trump with a ceremonial living shamrock in a hand-cut Waterford Crystal bowl.
In his speech, Martin noted that the term “United States of America” itself was first used in a letter by Corkman Stephen Moylan, who, according to the Irish Times, was an adviser to George Washington.

The legend of St. Patrick’s Day
Born in the fourth century, Saint Patrick spent his life crossing the rugged borders of medieval Ireland to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Celtic people.
In the face of relentless persecution, imprisonment, and even assassination attempts, he went into unknown lands and hostile territories to preach the truth, fearlessly obeying Christ’s command to “make disciples of all nations.”
Tradition has it that during 40 days of prayer and fasting on the mountaintop, he drove out all the serpents and demons from the Emerald Isle and taught the pagans the secret of the Holy Trinity with the help of the shamrock, setting fire to untold hearts for Christ.
‘Saint Patrick lives in our country’: Trump
In his message to Irish Americans, US President Donald Trump said: “St. Patrick lives on in our country and around the world today as a heroic Christian witness, a testament to the power of prayer and a timeless example of the strength of the Irish people.”
And every March, in his honor, hundreds of thousands of Americans flood our largest cities and towns in endless seas of green in an epic celebration of Irish heritage.”
He noted that the US was celebrating “250 glorious years of American independence” and paid tribute to the distinctive role of Irish Americans in the nation’s national journey.
“This St. Patrick’s Day and during Irish American Heritage Month, we send our best wishes to all Americans who celebrate Ireland’s patron saint. We pay tribute to the generations of Irish American heroes who have kept his legacy alive and led our nation to incredible new heights,” Trump added.
