Film director SS Rajamouli has landed in controversy after the Rashtriya Vanara Sena filed a complaint against him at the Saroornagar police station accusing him of making derogatory remarks about Lord Hanuman during the first sneak peek of his upcoming film Varanasi starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, Suthran Jonas.
The event was held at Ramoji Film City and was attended by more than 50,000 fans and industry members.
What did Rajamouli say?
“I don’t believe much in gods. It’s an emotional moment for me. I don’t believe in God. My dad came and said Lord Hanuman will take care of things for me. After the mistake happened, I raised my voice to him and said, ‘Is this how he leads me?’ My wife is a great admirer of Hanuman. He treats God as his friend and talks to him. I also expressed my anger at her and said, ‘Is she doing this?'” Rajamouli said.
Why the complaint against Rajamouli?
The Rashtriya Vanarasena organization claimed that Rajamouli’s comments hurt Hindu sentiments and raised concerns about what it called a growing pattern of disrespect for Hindu deities in the film industry.
Following the event in Varanasi, organizations including Vanarasena and Gow Rakshak Sangh filed a written complaint with the Saroor Nagar Superintendent of Police, accusing Rajamouli of “intentionally insulting Hindu deities” and making remarks “with the intention of inciting religious hatred,” an India Today report said.
