The management of Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple in Srisailam has decided to strictly enforce the single-use plastic ban in the city. In their renewed efforts to implement the ban, the temple authorities engaged local residents, management and local businessmen by creating awareness about the single-use plastic ban.
Srisailam Temple Executive Director (EO) M. Srinivasa Rao said single-use plastics have been banned in the temple town as a step to preserve the environment and protect wild animals. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that meetings were held with stakeholders involved in the implementation of the ban and experts and they were briefed on the harmful effects of plastic use as well as alternatives to plastic.
“The use of plastic water bottles, plates, glasses, spoons, forks and cups has already been banned in the temple town,” Mr. Srinivasa Rao said.
Meanwhile, the EO, interacting with stakeholders, asked local businessmen to use clay, steel or brass water bottles instead of plastic bottles. “Carrying bags made of paper, jute or cloth should be used instead of plastic. Similarly, plastic plates should be replaced with banana leaves, steel plates or leaf plate. Management of various feedlots and those staying in them must be made aware of this,” he said. He said more than 30 free RO plants have been installed in the temple town to stop devotees from buying plastic water bottles.
For better waste management, the EO insisted that scavengers, traders and hoteliers should mandatorily maintain two separate dustbins – one for dry waste and the other for wet waste.
Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that reckless disposal of plastics leads to soil and groundwater pollution and also sometimes leads to the death of wild animals. Plastic disposal clogs drains, leading to unsanitary conditions and the spread of disease, he added.
“Revenue and Vigilance officials will conduct checks and impose penalties on those using banned plastic materials in the temple town,” he said.
