Former President Sri Lanka Ranil Wickeretesinghe was arrested on Friday for the allegedly “abuse of government funds”, AFP said police detective.
Wickremesinghehe was taken into custody after a visit to London was interviewed for September 2023 to participate in the ceremony for his wife at the University while he was the head of state, said, as AFP says.

In 2023, Wickeretesinghe stopped in London on his return from Havana, where he participated in the G77 summit. During his visit, he and his wife Maithree attended the ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton.
Wickremesinghe said that his wife had covered her own travel expenses and that no public funds were used on her journey.
However, the Cidal Investigation Department (CID) claimed that Wickremesinghe had used government funds for what was essentially a private visit, including the coverage of his bodyguards with state money.
Wickremesinghehe became president in July 2022 after the remaining part of the Gotabaya Rajapaksy period after Rajapaksa resigned after months of protests over alleged corruption and poor management.
Wickeretesinghe is attributed to the stabilization of the economy after the worst financial collapse of the country in 2022.
In September he lost a re -elected offer.
