The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) on Monday announced a special 100-day awareness campaign starting next week to encourage construction of rainwater harvesting (RWH) pits in all houses and residential complexes.
Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy said that RWH pits are necessary in houses measuring 200 square yards and mandatory in houses measuring 300 square yards and above.
Addressing officials and residents of Madhapur on Monday, he said that despite receiving significant rainfall every year; only a small fraction is currently recharging aquifers. The campaign aims to educate the public about the need to capture rainwater and channel it into the soil through RWH pits.
Earlier surveys by the board identified thousands of housing complexes without RWH pits. The special campaign will also specifically promote community RWH systems in gated communities and convert disused wells into injection wells.
Urging residents to actively participate in the campaign, Mr. Reddy said widespread adoption of RWH sumps could reduce dependence on tanker water supply and future large-scale drinking water schemes, ensuring sustainable availability of water for all.
