The State Platform for Common School System – Tamil Nadu on Saturday urged MPs to save education by preventing the passage of the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan (VBSA) Bill, 2025.
In a statement, they said the VBSA bill had been referred to a joint parliamentary committee. “A Parliamentary Joint Committee cannot discuss a Bill which does not fall under the Parliamentary jurisdiction. Parliament has no power to deal with a subject listed in Schedule 2,” they added.
PB Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary of SPCSS-TN, said the VBSA Bill 2025 would deny education to “bahujans”. “As the government withdraws from funding education and allows full access to private players, more importantly, foreign players, state governments will have no power and control to prevent education from becoming a commercial commodity,” he said.
They noted that every research, every faculty and every student will be under the watchful eye of the Union Government as academic freedom will be lost.
“A reading of Entry 44 of List 1, Entry 32 of List 2 and Entry 25 of List 3 under List 7 of the Constitution of India will help to understand that the Union Government can only coordinate and determine standards in higher education,” the statement said.
