World Sparrow Day was celebrated with gusto at the People for Animals (PFA) Mysuru shelter at Bogadi in association with Jeev Daya Jain Charity on Friday. The event highlighted the need for urban conservation and biodiversity conservation to save sparrows.
Vaibhav B., Master Pranic Healing Trainer, spoke about the ecological impact of the large-scale killing of sparrows in China and highlighted the vital role of birds in controlling insect populations and maintaining ecological harmony.
Eco-friendly items such as clay birdhouses, water bowls and feeders were distributed to encourage citizens to support bird conservation efforts.
A key attraction was the launch of two innovative educational board games by Kokila Ramesh Jain – ‘Sparrow Lady of Mysore’ – aimed at creating awareness among children in an engaging way. The games focus on sparrow-related knowledge and instructions on how to install and maintain birdhouses. As part of the green initiative, participants planted fruit and flowering trees to help create a natural habitat for birds.
Ms. Jain also shared some simple steps to help revive sparrow populations, including installing nest boxes, providing water and grain, avoiding pesticides, planting native species, and providing safe nesting sites.
The program concluded with a pledge to protect sparrows and promote urban biodiversity.
