The district police office here came alive with rural traditions as the police department celebrated Sankranti with gusto on Wednesday.
Superintendent of Police (SP) P. Jagadeesh and his wife Hema Jagadeesh attended as chief guests and inaugurated the ceremony by lighting the ceremonial lamp and bonfire of ‘Bhogi’. The event showcased a number of traditional activities including kite flying, gundata (a traditional game) and ‘utti kottadam’ in which the SP actively participated and the gathering drew applause.
The SP rode on a decorated bullock cart, underscoring the festival’s deep connection with farmers and rural life. Police personnel came dressed in traditional attire instead of their usual khaki uniforms. Rangoli designs created by police families were exhibited and awarded, with prizes given to the winners. Sweets and gifts were distributed to the children by Mrs. Hema Jagadeesh.
Welcoming the gathering, the SP said that these cultural events provide the police officers with a refreshing break from their demanding duties and help them recharge. He urged the public to celebrate the festival responsibly, support traditional sports and avoid prohibited activities.
