Southwest Monsoon: Orange alert sounded in six districts of Kerala

After a three-day delay from the normal onset date of June 1, the Southwest Monsoon set in over Kerala on Thursday (June 4, 2026).

Monsoon advanced over parts of Southwest and Southeast Arabian Sea, some parts of West Central and East Central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep, Kerala and Mahe Islands, some parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of Comoros region, Southeast Bay of Bengal and other parts of Southwest, East West Bay of Bengal and Northwest and Northeast Bay of Bengal. bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Conditions are favorable for further advance of southwest monsoon to more parts of central Arabian Sea, whole of Goa, some parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, some other parts of Karnataka, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, southwest Bay of Bengal, some other parts of west-central, east-central and northeast Bay of Bengal, they said in the next two to three days to north Bay of Bengal, and some parts of the next three days from north Bengal bay.

Widespread rains with isolated heavy showers have occurred over Kerala during the last two days.

The IMD also issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts on Thursday, while a yellow alert was issued for the rest of the state warning of isolated heavy rainfall.
