Intensification of easterlies and cyclonic circulation have shifted the zone of heavy rainfall towards south Tamil Nadu, with heavy showers expected in several districts till November 8.
The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) has predicted that Tamil Nadu will experience increased rainfall activity from November 5, especially in south Tamil Nadu. Cyclone Murasu is weakening into a well-marked low pressure area and the Northeast Monsoon is expected to return to its active phase.
Heavy rainfall, which would be concentrated over Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts on November 5, would spread to other districts including Thoothukudi and Sivaganga on November 6.
North coastal districts of the state will experience wet weather due to strengthening moist easterly winds till November 8, RMC officials said.
Various places like Salem (4 cm), Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri (3 cm), Thanjavur (2 cm) and Tirunelveli received light to moderate rainfall till 7 pm on Wednesday.
VR Durai, head of the regional weather forecasting centre, said that a cyclonic upper air circulation over south TN and surrounding areas will bring widespread rainfall, especially in southern and delta areas till November 8.
For example, on November 8, heavy rainfall is expected to cover districts like Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram and Tiruvarur. Those along the Western Ghats have chances of light rainfall this week. “Tamil Nadu is likely to experience a wet Deepavali this year,” he said.
A few other places will see light rain this week. As easterly waves are expected to intensify, there is a possibility of increased rain activity over Tamil Nadu, including coastal areas, after November 8.
A wet spell would keep maximum temperatures near normal in most parts of the state through Sunday. Seasonal rainfall in Tamil Nadu now remains at 11% excess over the normal share of 20.2 cm as of 1 October. Continued wet weather is expected to add to the excess rainfall, officials said.
