A 20 -year -old South Korean student at Purdue University, Yeonsoo Go, was detained by us. Immigration and enforcement of customs outputs (ICE) after a routine visa hearing in New York, evoking outrage of groups for immigrants and religious leaders.
Go, daughter Rev. Kyrie Kim – The first woman consecrated in the diocese in the soul of the Korea’s Anglican Church – was 31. The court granted her a sequel until October, but ICE agents detained it immediately in front of the court building.
Episcopal dioceses in New York and several groups of advocacy require her immediate release and claim that GO is legally residing in the US and that the immigration authorities have acted incorrectly.
Legal stay in the question
According to the Go family, she legally entered the US in March 2021 on a visa addicted to the R-2 and accompanied her mother, who moved to religious work on the R-1 visa. Her legal stay was reportedly prolonged in 2023 and remains valid until the end of 2025. However, immigration officials have interpreted her visa status differently and classified her presence as illegal.
“She followed every legal procedure, appeared in court as needed, and now finds herself behind bars – that’s unacceptable,” said a spokesman for the bishop’s diocese.
Burst
He pointed out the case in the Korean-American community and immigrants. Supporters claim that ICE has violated the proper process by detaining someone with the waiting and active legal status.
