Sourav Ganguly has filed a police complaint over a Facebook page defaming his reputation

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has filed a police complaint at the Thakurpukur police station over alleged defamatory content being circulated on social media. The complaint is against an unofficial Facebook page called “Sourav Ganguly Fans” and also mentions the media platform Sportzwiki.

India Today reports that the post falsely claimed that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had raided Ganguly’s residence, a claim it strongly rejected as completely false and misleading.

Ganguly claims that such fabricated information is being spread with the intention of damaging his reputation. Following a complaint filed on June 15, police authorities began investigating the matter.

TENDULKAR, GAVASKAR TARGETS EARLIER

Ganguly is not the first cricketer to be targeted by fake or defamatory posts on social media. In 2023, Sachin Tendulkar was subjected to misuse of his name, image and voice in fake online advertisements and posts.

Tendulkar filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police Crime Branch against unidentified individuals for using his identity to deceive people and potentially deceive users online. Following his complaint, the Mumbai Police Cyber Cell registered a case under sections 420, 465 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and started an investigation.

Similarly, Sunil Gavaskar has consistently taken a strong stand against the misuse of his identity on social media. He has taken legal action over several instances of false and defamatory content circulating on his behalf, where false quotes and manipulated posts were attributed to him without consent.

According to reports from the Delhi High Court proceedings Gavaskar sought protection of his personality rightswith several social media platforms and websites misusing his name and image. The court took cognizance of the matter and ordered platforms like Google, Meta and X (formerly Twitter) to remove the infringing content and take action against fake posts within strict time limits.

These cases highlight how even legendary cricketers continue to struggle with misinformation and identity theft in the digital age, with legal intervention becoming an increasingly important tool to protect their reputations.
