The Center has decided to lift the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect by invoking powers under the National Security Act, an official statement said on Saturday.
Wangchuk was detained on 26 September 2025, two days after violent protests rocked Leh against demands for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
He was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on the orders of the Leh District Magistrate to “maintain public order” and then taken to Jodhpur jail.
Wangchuk has already served nearly half of his NSA detention, the statement said.
“The government is actively working with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people of the region,” it said.
