Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Indian batting helped Mumbai chase down a massive target of 235 against Haryana in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) on Sunday, December 14 at the DY Patil Academy, Ambi, Pune. The opening batsman played a breathtaking innings of 101 off 50 balls, laced with 16 fours and a six, as Mumbai bowled over Haryana’s monumental total in just 17.3 overs.
It was the second most successful chase in SMAT history after Jharkhand were bowled out for 236 against Punjab a few days ago. Jaiswal was first involved in a quick opening stand with Ajinkya Rahane, adding 53 runs off just 19 balls. He later put together a crucial 88-run partnership with Sarfaraz Khan off 37 balls for the second wicket. Sarfaraz also scored a sensational 64 off 25 deliveries, taking Mumbai to a score of over 140 in the first ten overs.
Jaiswal’s century comes at a crucial time, e.g Shubman Gill has consistently struggled to open the innings for India in T20Is. Since returning to the T20I side in 2025, Gill has scored 263 runs from 14 innings at an average of 23.90 and a strike rate of 142.93 without registering a single half-century.
As a result, Jaiswal’s century sent a strong message to the selectors even as he continues to remain out of T20I contention. Jaiswal last played the shortest format in 2024 against Sri Lanka. He was also part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup 2024 but did not get an opportunity to feature in a match during the tournament.
Recently, Jaiswal also scored his maiden ODI hundred in the third match against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. He played a magnificent innings of 116* off 121 balls, aided by 12 fours and two sixes, to guide India home in 39.5 overs chasing a target of 271.
