The Chennai police have registered another case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenders Act (POCSO) against Gem Granites chairman R. Veeramani.
The case was registered based on the statements of two minors that they were sexually abused by the businessman. The charges were struck and investigated as a single case. With that, police are investigating the alleged exploitation of 10 minor girls in all six cases, police sources said on Sunday. This is the sixth case registered under the POCSO Act against the octogenarian, who was also registered in 2004 in a case of inciting a minor to commit suicide, sources said.
Investigators will soon take Mr. Veeramani into custody in a second POCSO Act case. In the first case, he was investigated by the police, where video footage was available and the complainant, who remained unidentified for a long time, was eventually identified by the police. Meanwhile, a search was launched at Veeramani’s residential premises on Lloyd’s Road in Royapettah. Police conducted searches based on specific information, sources said. “We have submitted a motion to the designated court to remand the accused for questioning in another case,” said the senior police officer.
Mr. Veeramani and his associates were arrested in the first case and lodged in Puzhal Central Jail. They were later detained under the Goondas Act. In all other cases, the accused would be formally arrested, sources said.
