Six workers were killed after the collapse of a rock collapse in a granite quarry near Ballicrava on Sunday in Bapatla District of Andhra Pradesh.
According to preliminary reports, massive rocks collapsed on the migrant workers from Odisha, while quarry operations were underway, resulting in immediate death and injury.
Bapatla SP Tushar Dudi said that nine workers were imprisoned under the debris and rescue operations were immediately started. Four died on the spot, while the remaining five were moved to the hospital, where the other two succumbed to injuries during treatment. “The remaining victims are out of danger,” he added.
The deceased were identified as Danda Badatya (48), Banamal Chehra (30), Bhaskar Bhishhoi (40), Santosh Goud (36), all from the Odishov district of Ganjam, Tamun Dalai (37) Mussajan (43) also from Odisha.
The case has been registered and the investigation is turned on.
Meanwhile, the state government promised full support to the deceased families and confirmed that medical care for the injured would be preferred.
Main Minister N. Chandrababa Naida expressed deep sadness over the incident. He said it was extremely painful that so many lives were lost when workers were on duty. He ordered officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident.
The Minister down the Ravindra, who expressed deep shock and sadness over the loss of life, said that strict measures were taken against those who are tragedy.
The Minister for Education and IT Nara Loket described the death of daily wage workers as heartbreaking and promised that the government would stand in surviving families.
Ministers of Kolus Partharathi, who is also the district minister, BC Janardhan Reddy, Anagani Satya Prasad and Gottipati Ravi Kumar expressed their sorrow over tragedy.
Local residents claim neglect
Meanwhile, the locals argued that accidents from the quarry near Ballicrava became alarming frequent and, despite repeated incidents, the authorities were unable to recover security protocols. They urged the government to take immediate and strict measures to prevent the repetition of such an incident in the future.
