
Six persons were arrested by the Vaniyambadi town police on Saturday for possession of 1200 narcotic tablets (Tapentadol) at the new bus stand in Vaniyambadi town of Tirupattur.
Police said the arrested persons have been identified as S. Akash, 23, B. Prasanth, 22, V. Pratap, 21, K. Arish, 20, R. Prasanth, 21, and S. Ashwin, 21. They are residents of Coimbatore. The initial investigation revealed that on the tip-off to Tirupattur SP V. Shyamala Devi, special teams were formed to conduct surprise checks at places like bus terminus and railway stations and isolated buildings in the district.
Accordingly, a special police team was conducting a routine check near the Vaniyambadi railway station when the team received an alert about suspects leaving the station for a terminal bus.
Police said a team immediately rushed to the terminus and arrested the suspects. Investigation revealed that the gang had placed an order for the tablets with pharmacies in Mumbai. The tablets were sent to them by courier.
Police tracked the mobile phones of the suspects involved in the crime before chasing them down near a bus stop. A case has been registered. The arrested persons have been lodged in a sub-jail in Tirupattur town. A probe is underway.
