Six people have died in the Rajasthan district of Alwar in the last three days, allegedly after consuming disturbing alcohol, which has led to extensive concern and criticism of the reaction of the district administration. The deaths were reported from the villages of PAITPUR and KISHANPUR below the boundary of Akbarpur police station, while the victims aged 39 to 65 years of age. Several others remain hospitalized.
The first mortality appeared on April 26, followed by another five over the next two days. A total of four deaths were recorded on April 28, which launched a visit to a joint team consisting of officials from the Income, Health, Exclusive Tax and District Administration.
The preliminary findings indicated that three deaths were caused by excessive alcohol consumption, said the collector of the Alwar Artika Shukla district on Wednesday. The remaining cases, as she said, were not associated with alcohol. However, the excise duty department has launched an event against those involved in the production and distribution of illegal liqueur in this area.
The locals argued that illegal shops operated by liqueur mafia have expanded together with authorized alcohol stores in the region. The raw and unlicensed liqueur is reportedly sold impunity, they said.
The villagers who expressed anger at what they called “delayed and insufficient” administrative reactions, demanded 1 May Mahapanchayat to promote a strict action against the mafia liqueur and officials who allegedly complicated negligence.
The opposition Congress also put pressure on the state government and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and their prosecution in the Fast Trace Court. Tika Ram Jully, the leader of the opposition in the State Assembly and Mla from the ALWAR Rural, called on the government to expand the compensation to the families of the deceased.
