Madrid, 28 May (Reuters) – At least six people died when a migrant ship linked to the Spanish Canary Islands rolled out of El Hierro, when rescuers accompanied them to the port, he said on Wednesday regional emergency services.
A ship with an open peak, which, according to the state transmitter, was loaded by about 180 people, went down as it approached the port of La Resting on El Hierro, the smallest island of the archipelago.
The naval emergency services spokesman said the rescue boat had accompanied the ship to the port and as it was approaching, many of his passengers seemed to have rushed to the one side of the uncertain vessel, which caused it to change.
Live shots of TVA showed that the ship was dive and threw migrants – including children – into the water, and many tried to climb nearby naval rescue boats when her crew had preference to them before.
A medical helicopter was sent to help the emergency personnel rip migrants out of the water, the emergency services said.
The number of migrants, who got to the Canary Islands from West Africa, achieved the highest maximum in 2024, but this year the number of arrival decreased this year, the Ministry of the Interior suggests.
The Atlantic route is particularly dangerous because the harsh weather can easily overturn fragile rafts, excavation ships and boats used by mostly migrants.
In the first five months of 2024, 4,808 people died on the Atlantic cruise to the Canary Canals after leaving Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia, according to the group for walking. (Reporting Javi West Larrañaga and Emma Pinedo; editing David Laton and Mark Heinrich)
