SIR: The Congress expresses concern over the announcement to the grandson of former MP and KPCC Bureau Chief

The Congress party has objected to the notice issued by the election authorities to former MP BM Mujahid’s grandson and KPCC office bearer Shahjaman Mujahid amid the ongoing SIR (Special Intensive Revision) of the electoral rolls.

Vidyanagar Block Congress Committee President Rajat Ullagaddimath said in a press release that Mr. Mujahid, who is also the KPCC Protocol Committee Co-Convener and Party Agent Level 2 (BLA-2) at Polling Station No. 170 in Hubballi-Central Assembly Constituency, has been issued a notice for family record irregularities in alleged family mapping records.

According to the notice, Mr. Mujahid’s name does not appear in family chart records. However, the authorities found no problem with the names of his father Rizwan, mother and younger brother who live in the same house with him and their names appear in the draft list.

In a press release, the party claimed that the incident was indicative of a wider attempt to remove eligible voters from the electoral rolls and expressed concern that members of marginalized communities and supporters of opposition parties could be affected during the process of revising the electoral rolls.

The party described the alleged exercise as an attempt to “steal votes” and questioned whether ordinary voters could be adequately protected if the voting rights of an officially appointed booth-level representative were challenged.

The Congress urged the Election Commission and election officials to ensure that the electoral roll revision process is conducted in a transparent and impartial manner and that no eligible voter is disenfranchised without due process.
