In a letter to the Kolkata Police, the Election Commission on Wednesday drew attention to the incident of security breach at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in West Bengal on November 24 amid the ongoing SIR process in the state and sought a report within 48 hours.
The inquiry body directed the police authorities to take all possible measures to ensure the safety and security of police officers and staff posted in the office of the Director General, their residence and while commuting to and fro.
“The commission further directs that adequate security classification be done due to sensitivity related to the activities of the SIR and the upcoming elections in the state and to ensure that no further unusual incident takes place,” the EC said in the letter.
The Election Commission said earlier today that around 14 thousand SIR enumeration forms have been identified in West Bengal so far.
The official said these voters were either absentee, duplicate, died or moved permanently. “As of Tuesday noon, the number was 13.92 lakh,” he said. “We expect this number to grow every day as more updates come out.” This figure has risen sharply from 10.33 lakh on Monday evening, PTI reported.
