Guwahati: Main Minister Assam Himanta Bisw Sarma said on Sunday that the police in Singapore were looking for “vital information” from the late singer Zateen Garg as part of his ongoing investigation of his death last month.
Sarma said in an interview with PTI in Guwahati that the state government has already collected the required entry and shared them with the authorities in Singapore. “Yesterday, the Singapore police sent some fundamental questions to his family. We gathered and handed them over to the Singapore’s authorities. They are investigating the case very seriously,” the chief minister said.
Sarma has not published the nature of the information required.
There is an investigation under threshing
Garg, one of the most famous cultural icons of Assam, died on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore, where he traveled to attend the 4th edition of the Northeast India festival.
The Indian government has triggered a contract on mutual legal assistance with Singapore to ensure full cooperation in the probe. Sarma said the police and Singapore’s Assam authorities are actively investigating this case.
“The way the Assam police was active is the Singapore police as active. They want to give us a proper report after a thorough investigation,” he said.
The main minister added that several questions from Assam investigators are still waiting for Singapore. “Regardless of the information or statement we need, we have sent our application through the Ministry of the Interior of the Union under the threshing.
SIT Problems of fresh summons
A special investigation team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) leads the probe to Garg’s death. The Assam Police recently released a fresh summons to 10 Assam Association Singapore members after they did not appear before the investigators until 6 October.
So far, only one person has appeared, Rumkamal Kalita and has been interviewed for more than 24 hours. Sarma said many others have now assured the police of their cooperation.
“They asked for a video conference, but we refused. A significant number of Singapore’s Assamese assured us that they would work together. We can expect good news in one or two days,” Sarma added.
