Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu was expelled from the party on Monday (December 8, 2025) after she courted controversy by saying that anyone with “₹500 crore” can become chief minister. Mr. Sidhu is a retired cricketer.
Speaking to the media in Chandigarh last week, Ms Sidhu, a former MLA, said, “Mr Navjot Singh Sidhu will return to active politics only if the Congress party declares him as the chief ministerial face of Punjab and that they have always stood for Punjabi.” She then added that “Whoever offers ₹500 crore in a trunk can become the Chief Minister.
An order to suspend the Punjab State Congress Committee was issued on December 8, signed by its president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, without assigning any reason.
“Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu is hereby suspended from primary membership of the party with immediate effect,” the order said.
Soon after, political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), looked to the Congress for answers. BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh said Ms. Navjot Kaur’s remark exposed the “money bag” politics of the Congress. AAP Punjab general secretary Baltej Pannu said the remark was “deeply disturbing” and sought a response from the Congress.
