So much talk of a cabinet reshuffle may not be in sight at least now. A discussion between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharg that raised hopes among the cabinet nominees remained inconclusive on Monday. Another round of discussions is likely to be held at the end of this month involving all central leaders before a decision is made.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is expecting a change of power, is learned to be against the idea of a cabinet reshuffle being pushed by the Chief Minister. Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Sunday hinted that any cabinet reshuffle could end speculation of a leadership change and that it meant there would be no leadership changes.
When asked about cabinet candidates after his return from Delhi, Mr Shivakumar told reporters here: “What is wrong with legislators hoping to get into the Cabinet. Everyone – MLAs and MLCs – has the right. In the past, people became ministers without anything or not being MLAs or MLCs. It is a minister’s prerogative and we would enjoy it a lot. Wrong?”
Sources close to Mr. Shivakumar also acknowledged that while he was not opposed to filling the two cabinet berths vacated by KN Rajanna’s sacking and B. Nagendra’s resignation, he was against the cabinet reshuffle as such. “We understand that a cabinet reshuffle cannot be done without the involvement of Mr. Shivakumar. Also, central leaders could be wary of any discord that could arise from cabinet nominees who do not make it to the cabinet or those who have been dropped,” they said.
