Although Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar have voiced their opinions and criticized each other, they have been seen together at several official events. File
A day after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar used social media to target each other amid the leadership battle, the two decided to hold a breakfast meeting at the former residence here on Saturday (November 29).
The Chief Minister said, “The high command phoned both of us and told us to meet. That’s why I invited him to the breakfast meeting.”
The Prime Minister reiterated that there had been no change in his position. “I will listen to what the high command says. He (Mr Shivakumar) has also said this several times,” Mr Siddaramaiah said.
Asked if he would go to Delhi, Mr. Siddaramaiah said he would if invited.
In a damage control exercise, the high command is believed to have ordered the two leaders to hold a breakfast meeting.
With the winter session of the state legislature set to begin in Belagavi on December 8, a meeting between the two Congress leaders would also send a message to rivals BJP and JD(S) that all is well under the ruling dispensation. The winter session of Parliament begins on Monday (December 1).
Although the two leaders have criticized each other, they have attended government meetings and several official government functions in recent days.
Sources also said that the breakfast meeting will also give the high command some leeway to hold talks with the two leaders and give some time to take firm decisions in the interest of the party.
The question is whether a breakfast meeting between the two leaders would be just a photo opportunity or provide common ground for a temporary truce.
