India head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar have faced criticism after Shubman Gill’s continued struggles in T20Is. On Thursday, December 11, Gill was dismissed for a golden duck after India were asked to chase down a challenging target of 214 against South Africa in the second T20I at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
Gill fell in the very first over of the chase and Lungi Ngidi gave South Africa their first breakthrough. Ngidi threw a 135 km/h fastball that went slightly away from the batter. Gill, attempting a straight defence, was bowled and Reeza Hendricks held a sharp catch at first slip to complete the dismissal.
India vs. South Africa 2nd T20I Update
The fans criticized Gautam Gambhir and the panel for repeatedly supporting Shubman Gill, leaving out other promising batsmen like Yashasvi Jaiswal.
One fan wrote, “This guy (Jaiswal) was our back-up opener in the last T20 World Cup. Ideally he should be our main opener in the upcoming T20 WC. But favoritism has taken him out of the T20I setup. If Subhman Gill doesn’t perform well in the next 3 matches. Then Yashasvi should replace him in the next T20I series.”
Another fan wrote: “OMG what is this favoritism from Gautam Gambhir to Shubman Gill? He got a duck today, how many chances will he get? Meanwhile, top openers like Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal sit while he continues to get opportunities.”
