NEW DELHI: India captain Shubman Gill returned to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings, reclaiming the world number one spot after six months by overtaking New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell in the latest update released on Wednesday.Gill now leads the rankings with 801 rating points, replacing Mitchell, who slipped to second place with 794 points after missing New Zealand’s recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies.

Gill back to the top when Mitchell’s reign ends

The ICC confirmed that Gill’s promotion came after Mitchell’s absence from the Black Caps’ last ODI assignment in the Caribbean.“Following the conclusion of the recent West Indies-New Zealand series, there has been some change at the top of the latest ODI rankings as the absence of Black Caps right-hander Daryl Mitchell has seen Shubman Gill bounce back to become the No.1 batsman in 50-over cricket,” the ICC said.The governing body also noted that “Mitchell held top billing since January of this year.”Gill’s return to the top underlines his remarkable consistency in the 50-over format, where he has established himself as one of the game’s premier batsmen. The Indian skipper had previously occupied the No.1 position before being overtaken by Mitchell at the start of the year.

There are three Indians in the top five in ODIs

India continue to dominate the upper echelons of the ODI batting rankings, with Virat Kohli retaining the third spot with 767 rating points, while Rohit Sharma remains fourth with 758 points.The latest rankings mean India now have three batsmen in the top five, highlighting the depth of their batting unit ahead of another busy ODI season.India also boast two other batsmen in the top 20, with Shreyas Iyer taking the 13th spot and KL Rahul taking the 18th spot.
