Shubman Gill claimed the top spot in the ODI rankings despite losing the ODI series to England

India captain Shubman Gill claimed the No.1 spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings despite India’s 2-1 series defeat to England, completing another impressive chapter in his rise as one of the world’s leading white-ball batsmen.

The latest ICC rankings update saw Gill return to the summit after New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell relinquished the top spot following the Black Caps’ recent ODI series against the West Indies. Gill became world number one in ODIs for the first time in November 2023 after a prolific run in the format, but slipped to second in January this year when Mitchell’s outstanding performances during New Zealand’s successful tour of India earned him the top ranking.

Six months later, the Indian captain won the crown.

Gill’s return to the top was driven by a superb individual performance against England. While India could not avoid a 2-1 series defeat, the 26-year-old became his team’s top run-scorer with 188 runs in three matches. He laid the foundation with a smooth 80 in the opening ODI at Edgbaston before adding two more valuable contributions, cementing his reputation as one of the most consistent batsmen in the 50-over format.

SOORYAVANSHI’s incredible rise CONTINUES

There was more good news for Indian cricket in the latest ICC rankings as teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued his meteoric rise in international cricket. The 15-year starter jumped 230 spots to No. 48 in his career in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings after starring in India’s 3-0 series win over Zimbabwe.

Sooryavanshi finished as the leading run-scorer of the series with 151 runs at an average of 50.33 and was rewarded with his first Player of the Series award. His fearless batting, highlighted by knocks of 50 off 19 balls and 81 off 49, made him the first player in men’s T20I history to score multiple half-centuries before turning 16.

India’s dominance in the T20I rankings also continued, with Ishan Kishan retaining the top batting position with 910 rating points. Tilak Varma climbed two places to sixth, while Shreyas Iyer jumped seven places to 24th. Ravi Bishnoi enjoyed the biggest rise among Indian bowlers, climbing 31 places to 41st after impressive performances against Zimbabwe to cap off another memorable week for India’s white-ball stars.
