Shubman Gill was the role model of Indian cricket in 2025. Everything was going well for the twenty-six-year-old was named the new captain of the Test team after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and followed up with an impressive show during the England tour. Gill scored 754 runs in 10 innings and helped his team secure a 2–2 draw during the tour.
His elevation to captain the ODI team followed, showing that India were fully behind him as their next big star across all formats. This support carried over to the T20I setup and would turn public opinion against him. Gill struggled to get up to speed with the Indian team’s fast-paced style and often caught up. An injury during the Test series meant he missed the ODI against the Proteas and then got a chance in the T20Is.
When he scored 32 runs in three matches, people started calling for his ax from the T20 World Cup 2026. To everyone’s shock, the BCCI took the advice and ended Gill’s 2025 very badly. After an injury during the T20I series, Gill is now back in action and this time in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
All eyes will be on the Indian ODI captain as he prepares for the New Zealand series. But the bigger thing on the star batsman’s mind will be to put the World Cup behind him and show his worth in the 50-over format and get some game time ahead of the first ODI against the Blackcaps.
With Kohli and Rohit in stunning form in the tournament, it will be the perfect time for Gill to put the T20 World Cup disappointment behind him and look to the future.
