Shreyas Iyer backs Ravi Bishnoi after costly debacle in Manchester T20I
Shreyas Iyer has backed Ravi Bishnoi to make a comeback after India suffered a four-wicket defeat in the second T20I on Saturday to go 0-1 down in the five-match series. Bishnoi endured a memorable outing, conceding 60 runs in his three overs India fell at Old Trafford in Manchester.
The 17th over turned out to be a nightmare for Bishnoi and Shreyas admitted it was the turning point of the match. With England needing 49 runs from 24 balls and the match tied, Bishnoi conceded 29 runs when Jacob Bethell dismantled him.
IND vs ENG, 2nd T20I: Highlights I Scorecard
Bishnoi also scored the third most expensive over bowled by an Indian in men’s T20Is, behind Shivam Dube’s 34 against New Zealand in 2020 and Stuart Binny’s 32 against West Indies in 2016. To top it all off, Bishnoi also struggled with his discipline without the ball during his three overs.
“I think one, I thought, well, he’ll come back strong after that. But again, in the 17th over, back-to-back, I think it kind of haunted us. But yeah, he’s definitely got to learn from that,” Shreyas said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
SHREYAS MADE SOORYAVANSHI
While Bishnoi took the day off, Shreyas was full of praise for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who became the youngest Indian to make his international debut, breaking the record previously held by Shafali Verma since 2019.
The teenage opener scored 14 off nine balls and smashed two sixes before being dismissed. He announced himself in style by dropping Jofra Archer for six and followed it up by clearing the ropes against Josh Tongue before Will Jacks finally saw off his promising cameo.
“I feel he has that unflinching attitude of being fearless and the way he approaches his game is just sensational to watch. And the way he bats in the nets, I think there’s something to learn from him, the way he plays his fearless cricket,” Shreyas said.
“So I didn’t expect him to be nervous, frankly, because he has been playing sensational cricket for the last few months and years. And we all know what he can offer as an individual. So I definitely backed him and the way he approached the occasion was nice to see,” added Shreyas.
India will look to level the series when they take on England in the third T20I at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday, July 7.
