Shreyanka Patil suffered a freak leg injury, stretchered off the park against the Netherlands

India suffered an injury scare during their Women’s World T20 clash against the Netherlands after all-rounder Shreyanka Patil injured her ankle in a freak incident on the pitch at Headingley in Leeds on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on the very first ball of the sixth over of the Dutch innings. Bowling around the wicket, Shreyanka fired a floater to the middle stump which Phebe Molkenboer nudged into the leg side. At half-stop from mid-wicket, Shreyanka sprinted to prevent further runs but landed awkwardly while trying to collect the ball.

The youngster immediately collapsed in pain, clutching her right ankle as worried teammates rushed to her side. Medical personnel were quickly called to the field to assess the injury for several minutes. The situation seemed serious as Shreyanka was unable to put any weight on her right leg.

It was a worrying sight for India that the 22-year-old was eventually carried off the field in a wheelchair, putting her availability for the rest of the tournament in doubt. When Shreyanka couldn’t continue, Shafali Verma stepped in to complete the ending.

India will now await the results of further medical assessments and hope that the injury is not as serious as it first appeared, especially with the crucial matches of the tournament yet to come.

SHREYANKA’S RELATIONSHIP WITH INJURY CONTINUES

Shreyanka endured a long battle with injuriesshe spent nearly 16 months on the sidelines before returning to competitive cricket. Her troubles began with a broken finger during the Asia Cup, though she recovered in time to feature in India’s 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE.

However, her comeback proved short-lived as she was later diagnosed with grade 3 shin splints in both legs, an injury that sidelined her for several months. The setback also forced her to miss the entire 2025 Women’s Premier League season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Shreyanka finally returned to international cricket during India’s T20I series against Australia earlier this year. She marked her comeback in style, producing a match-winning performance in the series decider at the Adelaide Oval and winning the Player of the Match award.

Meanwhile, if Shreyanka fails to recover in time, India have a replacement ready in Radha Yadav, whose experience and left-arm spin could prove valuable for the rest of the tournament. After their clash with the Netherlands, India will turn their attention to a crucial Group A clash against 2024 runners-up South Africa at Old Trafford in Manchester on June 20.
