State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) chairman Alexander Thomas has directed the health department to urgently review the inadequacy of basic facilities at the Government Maharaja Taluk Hospital in Karuvelipad.
The Commission has asked the Director of Health Services (DHS) and the District Medical Officer (DMO) to conduct an inquiry into the matter through the representation of the Additional Director of Health Services and the Deputy DMO. The action was taken in a case registered by the Commission based on a newspaper report.
The commission said the lack of basic equipment and shortage of doctors at the hospital should be looked into. If beds and treatment facilities are insufficient, they need to be addressed.
The hospital premises should be inspected for the presence of stray dogs and reptiles. If there is no compound wall, it should be built. The Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health should assess the progress of construction of the new block in the hospital and submit a report within a month, the Commission added.
