Mumbai Indians have faced initial questions over their team mix following their defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with the focus now on whether Sherfane Rutherford should replace the off-form Tilak Varma in the playing eleven.
Tilak’s struggles with the bat were hard to ignore. Batting at No.4, he has managed just 35 runs in four matches this season with scores of 20, 0, 14 and 1, raising concerns about his consistency in MI’s middle order.

“If you look at our top five, they’re match winners. You can’t really take anything away from them. Yes, they haven’t started well, but they’re world-class players,” Rutherford said after the game.
“When things don’t go your way, I think it’s important to support them and stand behind them. For me, I’m happy with where I’m at. I just hope the guys come to the party soon,” he added.
“Other than that, I’m pretty happy and willing to support the group. To win a tournament, it has to be a team effort, not just one individual,” Rutherford said.
The debate intensified after MI’s loss to RCB at the Wankhede Stadiumwhere despite a dismal 241, Rutherford’s unbeaten 71 gave the hosts a late push to maintain a decent lead.
In contrast, Tilak’s early dismissal added to MI’s problems in the chase. While the top order showed flashes, an inability to build lasting partnerships left them with too much work to do in the second half.
Often used as a shock substitute, Rutherford quietly built a strong case. He has already scored 101 runs in four matches this season and has shown the ability to step up under pressure and finish matches.
SHOULD I FOLLOW OR TWIT?
The numbers suggest that Rutherford has been more effective thus far, but the decision is not that simple.
Tilak has been a key part of MI’s set-up over the last few seasons and his ability to anchor and accelerate makes him a valuable option when he is in form. Management may be reluctant to make a drastic change early in the tournament.
Rutherford’s comments also reflect the team’s current mindset. Rather than rushing into changes, there is a clear emphasis on supporting proven players and giving them time to find their rhythm.
