Shooting in Switzerland: At least one dead and five injured after shots fired at rave party in Aargau; probe in progress | Today’s news

At least one person was reportedly killed and five people were injured on Sunday (local time) after a person opened fire at an event in northern Switzerland, local police said.

The incident took place in Aargau, the BBC reported, adding that the cantonal police had launched a large-scale operation to catch the accused. Police have also appealed to the public for any film or photographs of the incident.

The Blick tabloid reported that the shooting happened at a rave party, adding that the shots were fired before 3:00 a.m. (01:00 GMT) on the outskirts of the Aarauer Rave.

Almost 3,500 people attended the annual techno party between 3pm on Saturday and 2am on Sunday.

Aargau cantonal police said in a statement: “The search for the unknown perpetrator is ongoing,” adding: “Possible motives and the exact circumstances of the crime are still unclear.”

Police told Swiss media that the shooting happened near a racetrack in Schachen, Aarau, about 46 km (29 miles) west of Zurich.

According to media reports, police launched what they called a “massive response” after the incident to find the perpetrators. Several media reports also said that an army helicopter was deployed in the cantonal capital along with numerous police, rescue and medical teams.

Police spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold told the tabloid: “Several shots were fired into a large group of people.”

Witnesses told Blick that shots rang out around 2:30 a.m. while the rave party was still going on, adding that many people took refuge in a nearby gym. At first, partygoers thought the gunshots were fireworks.

A resident shared a video of the incident on social media, which showed deserted streets with several gunshots ringing out in the background.
