The streets leading to the Kote Marikamba temple in Shivamogga town were illuminated to welcome devotees for the five-day Marikamba Jatre, which begins on Tuesday. Held once in two years, the festival attracts thousands of devotees from various places.
The temple was decorated with fruits and roses. Almost 10,000 roses were used to decorate the temple. The celebrations began early Tuesday morning at Gandhi Bazar. A statue of Maha Kali was placed at the entrance of Gandhi Bazar.
SK Mariyappa, president of Kote Marikamba Seva Samiti, told the media on Monday that preparations for the event had been completed with the help of the City Corporation, police and other departments. The committee has taken utmost care to ensure that the devotees visiting the temple have a peaceful darshan of the deity.
Committee Secretary N. Manjunath said they had arranged for parking of vehicles in consultation with the police. Residents of the locality around the temple would face difficulty in removing vehicles during the festival, he added.
