Shikhar Dhawan threatens legal action over wrongful inclusion in World T20 Continent Cup
Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has denied agreeing to participate in the inaugural World T20 Continent Cup after finding his name listed among the participants without his permission. The left-handed batsman warned of legal action against the organizers and raised questions about how his name was included in the announcement of the tournament.
Dhawan has been announced as part of the Asia Warriors squad for the competition to be held in Hong Kong in December. The team was also advertised to feature Pakistanis Iftikhar Ahmed and Sohail Tanvir.
The former Indian opener took to social media to clarify his position and asked fans and media organizations not to rely on reports of his participation, which he did not approve. Dhawan’s social media post clarifying the case. (Photo: X)
“I have come across my name as a participant in the World T20 Continent Cup. My name has been used by the organizers without my knowledge or permission and my team will take appropriate legal action to address this,” Dhawan wrote on X.
“I request the media and my fans not to report or rely on any unauthorized announcements. Thank you for your continued love and support.”
ORGANIZERS CONFIRM DHAWAN’S WITHDRAWAL
Following Dhawan’s statement, the tournament organizers confirmed that he will not be part of the Asia Warriors squad. They attributed his absence to “scheduling conflicts and some technical considerations” but did not elaborate on the circumstances of his initial inclusion or his refusal to participate.
The development cast a shadow over the announcement of the squads of the tournament, with Dhawan promoted as one of the main names of the Asia Warriors. Former India spinner Rahul Sharma, West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith and Bangladeshi veterans Rubel Hossain and Mahmudullah Riyadh remain among the participants.
The inaugural edition is set to feature four teams, Asia Warriors, Europe Champions, Africa Lions and North America Eagles, comprising a total of 49 retired cricketers.
