A Public Interest Litigation has been filed before the Kerala High Court challenging a two-page jacket advertisement issued by the state government in several dailies, alleging misuse of public funds for political purposes in view of the upcoming parliamentary polls.
In his plea, Muhammed Shiyas, president of Ernakulam DCC, argued that the ad violated constitutional principles that require political neutrality in the use of public funds. The timing, content and presentation of the ad suggested a colorful exercise of power aimed at influencing public perception ahead of the parliamentary elections.
The ad contrasted with news headlines that depicted the alleged failures of previous state governments, while portraying the “successes” of the current government. This was aimed at creating a political narrative favorable to the current government, while being funded from the public purse, he said.
The HC asked the concerned respondents to respond and submit an affidavit within 10 days.
