Sharjeel Imam activist turned to the Supreme Court against the decision of the Delhi High Court, which dismissed his claim for bail in the case of the Delhi Riots 2020 case.
JUSTICES Bench Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur released Mr. Imam, Umam Khalid, Mohd Salem Khan, Shifa ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Meeran Haider, Abdul Khalid Saifi and Gulfisha Fatima.
Criminal prosecution opposed the lawsuits that this was not a case of spontaneous riots, but a case where the riots were “planned well in advance” with a “ominous motif” and “thoughtful conspiracy”.
Mr. Khalid, Mr. Imam and others were booked under the Act on Unlawful Activities (Prevention) (UAPA) and the provisions of the Indian Criminal Code for alleged “mastery” of unrest in February 2020, which left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured.
Violence broke out during protests against the Citizenship and National Citizens’ National Register.
