Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin accidentally revealed on his YouTube channel that all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been traded to Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of his IPL 2026 (Indian Premier League) retention deadline. All ten IPL teams have been given a deadline of November 15 to announce their list of retained and released players ahead of the 2026 season auction.
A new deal has emerged amid negotiations between Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the all-rounder Shardul Thakur. Ravichandran Ashwin made a huge splash on his YouTube channel and revealed the big shift between the two franchises.
“I don’t see any release from Mumbai, they won’t let anyone go. Their biggest concern would be to find a replacement for Deepak Chahar who is a bit injury prone. They got Shardul Thakur through a trade from LSG. That has happened, they will probably look for a spinner and get him too,” Ashwin said in a deleted portion of a video on his Baat ki Youtube channel.

Shardul Thakur was surprisingly unsold in the mega auction but was signed as an injury replacement by LSG for Mohsin Khan at his base price of 2 crore. Thakur had a good start to the season, scalping six wickets in the first two matches, including four against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, after a solid start, his performances went downhill as he finished the season with an economy rate of 11.02 with 13 wickets from ten innings.
According to reports, MI and LSG are likely to engage in an exchange of players between Thakur and Arjun Tendulkar through all-cash deals. Arjun has been part of the MI squad since 2021 but has played only five matches so far and has scalped three wickets and scored 13 runs. Meantime, both teams have yet to confirm the deal.
