The Shangumugham beach here will get a major facelift with this year’s Navy Day celebrations reportedly planned in Thiruvananthapuram.
The state government has issued orders to carry out emergency work at Shangumugham beach, where the event was held, and reports suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be the chief guest at the event on December 4.
The Water Resources Department has approved a ₹14 crore plan for “Emergency Retrofitting and Temporary Protection Works at Shangumugham Beach – Emergency Works”, saying that Mr. Modi is expected to visit Shangumugham. The works include beautification of the beach and “temporary protection” works based on a proposal submitted by the Chief Engineer (South Circle) of the Irrigation Department.
The Irrigation Department has been directed to submit the proposal to a review meeting convened by the Chief Secretary in July this year.
Navy Day is celebrated on 4 December every year to commemorate Operation Trident, the naval attack on the port of Karachi during the Indo-Pak War in 1971. The highlight of the event is an operational demonstration that showcases the rich maritime history and prowess of the Indian Navy.
This means that an official announcement about the 2025 Navy Day celebrations and Mr. Modi’s visit is awaited.
This will be only the third occasion that Navy Day is celebrated away from a major naval station. The first occasion was in 2023 when the celebrations were held at Tarkarli Beach in Sindhudurg taluk, Maharashtra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief guest on the occasion. The second occasion was in 2024 when the event was held at a blue flag beach in Puri, Odisha. President Droupadi Murmu was the chief guest then.
