India were shocked in Ranchi when Shai Hope produced another century to propel the West Indies to a record run and level the five-match series. On a night where the runs flowed freely and the bowlers had nowhere to hide, the visitors achieved a stunning victory, reaching the target with nine balls to spare.
After India piled up a mammoth 249 for five at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, the contest looked set for a comfortable home win. But Hope and company had other plans and turned what looked like a formidable goal into an unforgettable triumph.
It was another remarkable chapter in a sensational run of form for Hope. Less than a week after his century helped West Indies complete their most successful ODI chase in Mullanpur, the skipper was at it again. His last century led the Caribbean side to their most successful run chase in T20I history, the second most successful run chase in the format overall, after South Africa’s chase of 259 against the West Indies in 2023.
It was a night where the bat dominated the ball with a staggering 501 runs on a surface that offered very little help to the bowlers. Sanju Samson led the Indian innings with a brilliant 82 which gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about. Yet even an impressive number of 249 proved insufficient.
India’s bowling attack crumbled under pressure. Mayank Yadav stood out with three wickets but the rest struggled to dominate a West Indies side that refused to bend under the weight of the chase.
