As part of the globalization of its academic services, Sreenarayana Guru Open University (SGOU) is set to establish a state-of-the-art public digital library accessible 24/7 from anywhere in the world. Designed to benefit students, researchers and the general public, the project will be formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the university and the Cusatech Foundation CUSAT on March 16. The digital library developed on the ‘Software as a Service’ (SaaS) model aims to provide seamless access to extensive knowledge resources, especially for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The digital repository will contain an extensive collection of academic journals, theses, lecture notes and study materials tailored for various competitive examinations. A salient feature of the initiative is the digital preservation of Sree Narayana Guru’s works along with other important historical documents, making them available to a global audience. The project, which is due to be completed within a year, is expected to significantly strengthen the university’s international academic footprint.
The official signing will take place in the chamber of the CUSAT vice-rector, where the contract will be signed by CUSAT registrar prof. Arun AU and SNGOU registrar Prof. Abhilash Babu. The project is funded through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of Cochin Shipyard Limited, with development and implementation overseen by the Cusatech Foundation. High-ranking officials from Cochin Shipyard and syndicate members from both the universities are expected to attend the event.
Future phases of the project envisage integration of more than 2,000 libraries under the Kerala Library Council and converting them into digital corridors equipped with resources for competitive examination aspirants. SNGOU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jaganathy Raj VP said that the completion of this project will open a new window of knowledge for millions in Kerala and across the world and enhance the university’s mission to empower disadvantaged students through 24/7 access to information.
