SFI, KSU claim gains in Ernakulam university union polls

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) claimed gains in the union elections held in colleges affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University in Ernakulam on Tuesday.

SFI wrested union at Union Christian College, Aluva, from KSU after six years. She won the elections held at Indira Gandhi College, Nellikuzhi, winning 13 out of 14 seats in St. Peter’s College, Kolencherry.

A release issued by the federation claimed that it recorded an impressive performance in 32 out of 41 colleges in Ernakulam. SFI candidates got all seats in Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam. Some of the other college boards she won included Government Law College, Ernakulam; St. Louis Albert’s College, Ernakulam; Bharata Mata College, Thrikkakara; KMM College, Thrikkakara; St. St Louis Paul’s College, Kalamassery; MES College, Kunnukara; Jai Bharat College, Perumbavoor; St. Louis Kuriakose College, Perumbavoor; and Mar Elias College, Kothamangalam, stated.

In a statement, the KSU district leadership said it had wrested the union from SFI at Cochin College; Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam; Mount Carmel College, Kothamangalam; Kesari Government College, Paravur; IHRD College, Puthenvelikkara; and Sienna College, Edakochi.

KSU maintained unions at Sacred Heart College, Thevara; Sree Sankara College, Kalady; Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha; MES College, Marampally; Al Ameen College, Edathala; KMEA College, Pookattupady; MES College, Edathala; St. Louis Anne’s College, Angamaly; KMM College, Kumbalam; and BMC College of Arts, Aluva. KSU also won the chairman’s seat in St. Mary’s. Peter’s College, Kolencherry, and six posts, including that of vice-chancellor, at KMM College, Thrikkakara, he claimed.
