At least three women and one man were injured after they were hit by a commuter train near Sandhurst Road railway station in Mumbai, police officials said on Thursday.
The accident took place around 7:00 pm, some time after suburban train services on the Central Railway were disrupted due to a flash strike by employee unions protesting the FIR filed against two engineers in the June 9 Mumbra accident case.
Local media reported that three people died in the incident. However, Mumbai Police is yet to confirm this.
How did the incident develop?
Four people — including three women and a man — had alighted from the wrong side of the train and were walking on the tracks when they were hit, a railway official said. They were injured and were taken to a nearby hospital, a railway spokesperson said, PTI reported.
The three injured have been identified as Yafiza Chogale (62), Khusbu Mohmaya (45) and Kaif Chogale (22) – according to local media reports citing Sir JJ Hospital authorities.
What was the case of the Mumbra accident?
The Mumbra accident case that occurred on June 9 claimed two lives when two trains — one bound for Kasara and the other towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) — passed each other on a sharp bend. Some commuters hanging from the running boards of the buses fell onto the tracks after their backpacks brushed against each other, according to police.
After investigation, the Thane Railway Police summoned the Divisional Engineer-in-Chief and the Divisional Engineer of the Central Railway under section 125(a)(b) (acts endangering the life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Unions representing Central Railway employees halted suburban local train services at the busy Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus for nearly an hour on Thursday evening to oppose the FIR.
Train services were resumed after senior officials assured the protesters that they would take up the matter with state authorities.
Central Railway Public Relations Director Swapnil Nila told PTI that the protesting employees at CSMT did not allow motorists and conductors to operate trains between 5:50 pm and 6:45 pm.
The protest led to overcrowding of trains during the evening rush hours.
