Law enforcers in collaboration with the child helpline rescued seven children from the Ernakulam South railway station during the week, officials said on Wednesday. Six of them, including two toddlers, are from other states, while the girl is from Kollam district.
While the teenagers were found unaccompanied by parents or guardians, the toddlers, a girl around the age of two and a one-year-old boy, were found by a woman believed to be their mother who appeared to be mentally unstable, officials said. The woman and children were found on board the Guruvayur-Ernakulam passenger train on Monday (February 2). They were taken into custody by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) as the woman was found to be incapable of caring for the children. The trio was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and sent to a shelter.
The RPF on Monday rescued a 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl from Jharkhand who were in danger on board the Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express. In a similar case earlier in the week, they were also rescued by a girl and a boy who claimed to be from Odisha. “The children from Odisha said they had come to seek work in a cardamom plantation. Investigations are on to find out the details of their whereabouts and whether any child traffickers were involved in their journey,” said an RPF officer.
All the rescued teenagers were sent to CWC, while the Kollam girl, who reportedly left home in search of a boyfriend she met online, was sent away with her parents. She was rescued by the Government Railway Police at the South Railway Station.
The RPF conducts intensive checks on trains and stations as part of its nationwide operation AAHT (Action Against Human Trafficking), which aims to save women and children from traffickers.
