The Madras High Court on Friday dismissed a plea filed by TVK chief Vijay challenging the Income Tax department’s order directing him to pay ₹1.50 crore fine for allegedly not disclosing full income for 2015-16, PTI reported.
While dismissing Vijay’s petition, Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy said the sentencing order was issued within the prescribed period and therefore did not warrant any interference.
Therefore, the motion was rejected, the judge added.
When Vijay’s counsel sought permission to challenge the order, the judge said the petitioner can appeal the decision to the appropriate appellate authority, PTI reported.
The judge reserved judgment on January 23 after hearing arguments from both sides.
Here is what Vijay had to say
Vijay stated that he had declared an income of Rs ₹35.42 crore for the financial year 2016-17.
However, the Income Tax Department, based on documents seized during a raid at his residence in 2015, claimed that he had not disclosed ₹15 crores earned from the Tamil film ‘Pui’.
Based on the established facts, the department imposed a penalty ₹1.50 crore by an order dated June 30, 2022. Challenging the order, Vijay filed the present application and a single judge stayed the execution of the fine order on August 16, 2022, PTI reported.
