Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President K. Selvaperunthagai is set to visit DMK leader M. Karunanidhi’s mausoleum on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) to mark his birth anniversary.

At a time when the Congress and DMK are no longer in alliance, Mr. Selvaperunthagai’s visit fueled speculation. It may be mentioned that in the past, even when Congress was in alliance with DMK, the party did not follow the practice of visiting Karunanidhi’s memorial.

Selvaperunthagai reduces visitation

Mr. Selvaperunthagai tried to play down the significance of the visit, saying he had been paying his respects at the mausoleum since Karunanidhi’s death.

“Can I stop paying respects simply because we are no longer in the alliance? In Tamil Nadu politics, Kalaignar’s (Karunanidhi) development and contribution is undeniable,” he said.

He pointed out that the AICC also remembered Karunanidhi on his birth anniversary. “Remembering M. Karunanidhi on his birth anniversary – a visionary leader, prolific writer and champion of social justice. His commitment to equality, education and public welfare continues to inspire generations across India,” he said, quoting the AICC message.
